pages from the booklet "learning the ropes"

Cover and pages from “Learning the Ropes” booklet.

Description: An orientation program and accompanying booklet I created while heading up BYU’s Instructional Media Center (IMC). The training is based on the metaphor of learning the ropes on a 19th century sailing vessel.

My Roles/Contributions: Instructional design of the orientation program and graphic design of the booklet.

Instructional Details: Based on a 4-tiered program that roughly parallels novice, apprentice, journeyman, and master/mentor. Individual’s ranks were to be determined by supervisor and peer review using an inventory of skills included in the booklet.

Graphic Details: Typefaces: Display headings were Malagua, and the principal body text was set in Caslon Antique. Other fonts included Boswell and Berkeley Oldstyle (for sub-headings, the Table of Contents, forms, etc.).

Illustrations & Images: From original photos, or scanned from ship plans found in the BYU’s Harold B. Lee Library. Page texture (and one of the illustrations) was adapted from images scanned from a 19th century book about nautical knots.
