The media selection job aid.

The media selection job aid.

Description: Faculty are not often clear on when to use particular media. This challenge is particularly important due to the cost of creating good multimedia. This little job-aid was intended to aid faculty in others in choosing the right media for their instructional message. It was created initially for BYU for use in independent study coursework development, but also used in other settings as well.

My Roles/Contributions: I worked out the concept (instructional design), wrote the text (technical writing), and did the layout and graphic design of the job aid.

Instructional Details: Each media’s advantages and disadvantages are outlined in sequential order. With each, a question is posed to help the reader identify whether the media being discussed is appropriate to their instructional need.

Graphic Details: The table layout of the actual job aid shows the various media in the continuum order. On the left Public domain (Linux) icons were used to illustrate each of the various kinds of media; in the middle is a description followed by a rhetorical questions to help identify whether the media is the best choice. Finally, on the right are dollar-signs representing the rough cost of each.
